As much as I would have loved to join the rest of DC in complaining about the big blizzard we had two weekends ago, I couldn’t because I was one of the lucky few who got out of Reagan National early that Friday morning. I had a birthday weekend at my parents’ planned and I was not about to let 30 inches of snow get in my way!
Reading about the impending storm, I decided to try and switch my flight to the night before. This was a pipe dream, as evidenced by the 4 HOURS I spent on hold with United Airlines. I’m not even exaggerating. I called the hotline at 10pm, and stayed awake as long as I could before falling asleep to the sweet, sweet lullaby of staticky hold music. I was startled awake at 2am by “YOUR CALL IS IMPORTANT TO US, PLEASE –“ Clearly, super important. Needless to say, I t
hrew my phone across the room did not switch my flight, but I was optimistic given that I was scheduled to leave early on one of the first flights out before the snow.
Turns out a lot of people were hoping to be on the first flights out before the snow! Actually hundreds. After braving a security line that was the entire terminal long at 5:30am, being picked from the line and moved to pre-check because I was traveling alone (very safe rationale, TSA) and running to my gate, I made the flight and made it to Green Bay by 10am. It was an early morning, but it was so worth having the whole day left ahead when I arrived! It was the best birthday present, since that Friday was actually my 26th birthday. I had my mom allll to myself, which hasn’t happened in I don’t know how long, and we even had a nice birthday dinner that night with my grandparents.
The rest of the weekend was filled with fabric shopping, Starbucks runs and playing with puppies. And is there anything better than sipping a white chocolate mocha while walking around Target? My mom is a master seamstress and decorator so we picked up some adorable fabrics to compliment the bedding I picked for the guest bed in the baby room.
Super cute cherry blossom bedding I picked up at Kohls. Found here and currently on sale!
We (my mom) got right to work making a crib skirt, pillows for the big bed and the cutest receiving blankets you ever saw – she is a rock star Nana already! When Sunday came around and I was supposed to be heading home, my flight was cancelled shockingly and rescheduled for Monday. Then Monday’s was cancelled. This time around United didn’t even put me on hold, they just straight up disconnected me every time I called because they were “too busy.” Luckily Green Bay is the teeniest airport so we just drove right over there and I talked to an actual human at the ticketing counter and got my flights all figured out… so that was what it was like back in the day. And just like that, my whirlwind weekend turned into a 5 day visit and I got to camp out with my parents just the 3 of us! I got to see my dad for a couple days after all since he was out of town for the weekend and hug on my beloved dog Gus for a few extra days and it was well worth the extra leave I had to take off from work.
Here we are in February, I’ll be 30 weeks pregnant in a couple days and my baby shower is next weekend. We scheduled an infant care class and a hospital tour, what is happening??? I have the feeling the next 10 weeks are going to fly.
