Our JoJo is 5 months old as of this past weekend. We celebrated by going to Williamsburg to visit Zach’s parents, aka Gigi and Grandpa! I am really appreciating these little road trips a ton more now that I’m home with Josie every day. The change of scenery breathes new life into me. Josie is not a huge fan of the car but I’m getting better at timing trips so that we can maximize her snooze time.
What is new with Miss Lady this month:
She rolled from tummy to back! No interest in going the other direction yet. She likes tummy time now! She tries desperately to scoot, but doesn’t know what to do with her arms yet so she ends up sliding forward on her face. Shockingly, she does not enjoy that. She loves her hands! They are in her mouth all day every day and she also discovered her feet.
She is rarely fussy and smiles all the time. She only gets cranky in the evenings on days that her afternoon nap left something to be desired. She laughs quite easily especially for her daddy! She thinks peek-a-boo is hilarious. We FaceTime with family a lot and she always gets very excited when they talk to her from the screen. The other day we were FaceTiming with my mom and her little legs were kicking so much I thought she was going to scoot right off the bed!
She is very interested in everything we do, especially at the dinner table. She loves to reach for anything and everything on that table so we have to mind our water glasses! Her favorite toy is a bright orange tupperware lid we have named Lydia, and she still loves her Baby Einstein musical octopus. We haven’t started solids yet but maybe soon since she’s seeming intrigued.
When Duncan walks by she reaches for him and likes to “pet” him. He is such a good boy with her usually. Towards the end of the day he can get a little wild and unruly and has no regard for her safety whatsoever, but during the day when he’s a sleepy shmoop they have some sweet moments together. The other day he was sniffing her face and she whipped her arms up and grabbed his cheeks in her little vice grip and he didn’t even bat an eye. Lots of treats were had!
The biggest development this month was that Josie started sleeping in her own room, in her crib. At her 4 month appointment our ped said that since she was starting to roll we needed to transition out of the swaddle. Mama was devastated – that swaddle was pure magic when it came to getting Josie to stay asleep! I tried to put her down swaddled with her arms out but she woke up in less than a minute every time. We decided to try the Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit and it has been working really well for us. I don’t know why but we did everything cold turkey at the same time and started her in the suit AND in the crib all at once. That first night was pretty miserable; I think she slept for one hour at a time all night long. The next day I might as well have had an IV drip of coffee going. The next night was better, and the next was even better, and so on. Each night is different lately. Sometimes she’s up 4-5 times and other times (like last night, praise Jesus) she doesn’t make a peep other than to eat at around 1am and then 5am.
I’m still getting used to sleeping with the video monitor next to me. Everyone said once she was out of our room we would sleep better because we wouldn’t hear every little noise… do you people not use monitors?? Even on the lowest volume I hear everything she does in there. And crib mattresses are LOUD. Every toss and turn my brain starts to wake up, anticipating her. I started just turning it off halfway through the night because I figure if she really needs me I will hear her. We live in a small apartment for crying out loud.
When we go to get her in the mornings, she absolutely lights up when she sees us. It’s the cutest frickin thing. She loves waking up! We will remind her of this in approximately 12 years.
She is starting to get ticklish especially on her little neck!
Her favorite books are Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Little Blue Truck.
She is wearing 9 month clothes comfortably and size 4 diapers. We use Pampers Swaddlers and started using Pampers Baby Dry at night because I was grasping for reasons that she might be up so much in the second half of the night! I don’t know how much they really help though.
Josie still eats like a champ and like I’ve said before it has been so nice not being held prisoner by the boob all the time. She goes 3-4 hours between meals and doesn’t comfort nurse at all anymore (also kind of sad though). Her latest trick is blowing raspberries while she’s in the middle of eating, which just thrills me….
We got JoJo into the pool this month and she loved it! Definitely have a little water baby on our hands. My mom came and stayed with us for a week in August and we took JoJo to the pool in the afternoons when the pool was shady. She was so content for up to an hour at a time, just hanging with me and watching my mom bob around on her noodle. I can’t wait to take her to the beach next summer.
It was great having my mom here for an extended stay. I love having the company during the day and my mom is such a do-er so we got out of the house a lot. We painted my coffee table and end tables which I had been meaning to do for, oh, about three years. Thanks Mom! We will head up to Green Bay in October for a little mini vacation so the countdown is on for more Nana time. This time Zach is coming and I’m looking forward to the travel much more this time around knowing I’ll have the extra set of hands! I am SO PUMPED that fall is here and we can start enjoying things like cider and apple picking, and just being outside in general when it isn’t so oppressively hot. And the pumpkins. BRING ON THE PUMPKINS.
